Neil Speakman, a father from Greater Manchester, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison after his three-year-old son, Albie, was killed when he accidentally reversed a telehandler into him at their farm. Despite being cleared of gross negligence manslaughter, Speakman pleaded guilty to a Health and Safety at Work Act violation. The court found that Albie had been left unsupervised in an unsecured area, and the judge emphasized that caring for the child should have taken precedence over work, with multiple adults present to ensure his safety.
To state the obvious it was a terrible tragedy for the child, for you and for Ms. Bridge and the other family members... It was an entire failure to look after Albie and keep him safe.
Caring for his son should have come first and he should not have been working... There were three adults at the farm that day so there was nothing difficult in keeping him safe.
