EXCLUSIVE: Usher Shares the 1 Reason He Doesn't Ban Social Media for His Teen Sons
""I like to play board games. I like to listen to records on old vinyl. I like to have people come and talk at a table," he tells TODAY.com. It can be difficult for an analog dad to raise children in a tech-forward world. And that's why Usher decided to hop in the car with his two oldest kids - Cinco, 17, and Naviyd, 16 - to get back to basics."
"He linked up with Meta to film " Carversations," a content series in which celebrity parents have candid conversations with their teens about tough topics. Usher, Cinco and Naviyd chatted about social media ... and the fact that Usher did not make his sons' "close friends" lists on Instagram."
""It's funny but it's good communication," he says of joking about social media with his kids. "These types of things stimulate a certain dialogue, and that's the point. I want people to talk to each other. I'm taking a very savvy technical thing and getting back to a very important analog activity: talking to each other." "Hell, yeah!" he says immediately. "You're easier to communicate with because you can't run. If I'm clear that we're putting our phones down for the moment and talking, it means we don't interrupt it, and everybody's heard.""
Usher prefers analog activities such as board games, vinyl records, and in-person conversation. He invited his two oldest sons, Cinco (17) and Naviyd (16), on a car conversation to reconnect and address social media. He partnered with Meta for a content series where celebrity parents have candid talks with their teens about difficult topics. The sons teased that Usher did not appear on their Instagram close friends lists, which led to open, humorous communication. Usher enforces a phones-down approach in the car to prevent interruption and to model responsible online behavior for when teens gain fuller access.
