The article discusses the experiences of Black fathers of autistic children, particularly highlighting Tyrone Green's story. Faced with feelings of loneliness and misunderstanding regarding autism, Green found support in a group of fellow dads. They created the podcast AutisHIM to share their challenges and victories, aiming to help other Black fathers embrace their children's autism diagnoses. This movement seeks to elevate Black fathers' roles in the autism conversation and advocate for timely intervention and support for children in underserved communities.
In 2021, he joined a Black fathers' support group and met a few other dads eager to discuss their unique challenges. They started their own podcast in 2023 called AutisHIM.
These men say that their hope is not only to be considered more than sidekicks to mothers of the children, but also to help other Black dads accept autism diagnoses.
