A firefighter longed to be a dad. Then a baby was abandoned at his firehouse
Briefly

Chris Martinez, a firefighter in New Mexico, received an emotional call after a newborn baby was placed in a Safe Haven Baby Box. The baby, later named Mikel, was found in poor condition but became his son just after Chris and his wife Janae became certified foster parents. After visiting Mikel in the NICU, the couple fell in love with him, praying for a chance to keep him despite uncertainties of foster care. Their long wait for parenthood ended in a miraculous way with Mikel's arrival.
"I knew the moment I laid eyes on him that I wanted to be his dad," Chris says. "I was going to protect him."
"He was so fragile and I fell in love with him," she says. "I gave him that first bottle and I just looked in his eyes and it was instant. I knew."
