Parents often create magical moments in childhood that are overlooked by children at the time. Traditions like family vacations and special gifts during sickness foster lasting memories. As children grow into adulthood, they begin to recognize the hard work and love their parents invested, deepening their understanding of these experiences. Many share nostalgia for small acts of kindness, such as a bell to call for aid when sick, which illustrate the care taken to ensure comfort. This realization prompts reflection on personal parenting choices and hope that similar gestures create fond memories for their children.
Beginning around age seven, I had an insatiable desire to write. I would write pages and ramblings almost every day, whether it was full accounts of my day, idealized accounts of my day, stories set in fantasy worlds, or long, dialogue-only scenes. I always gave them to my mom, and she would read them all the way through.
When I was sick, my parents would give me a little bell that I could ring if I needed something. Now I realize they were doing it so I didn't have to yell for them if I had a sore throat or felt too sick. I never had to wait more than a minute for them to help me. I do this for my own kids now! I think it's so sweet and I hope my little ones remember it fondly one day.
