Google's AI Reshapes Organic Listings
"AI Overviews are answers to search queries. They summarize and cite top-ranking pages, typically, correlating traditional SEO with visibility in Overviews. AI Overviews: Eliminates searchers' need to click. If your target query triggers an Overview, the result is likely fewer clicks, even if the Overview cites your page. Cites pages that then often appear in average position 1 in Google Search Console with abnormally low click-throughs. Thus the average position in the Performance tab will increase, but click-throughs will decrease."
""People also ask" Traditional SEO typically recommends "People also ask" search-result questions in content to generate clicks. Now Google often serves AI-generated answers to "People also ask" queries, which decreases clicks in that section and in organic listings. Suggested topics Google now inserts a section that I call "suggested topics." It functions similarly to a fan-out result, wherein Google suggests related topics to queries with multiple intents. For example, a search for "roof repair" could trigger suggestions exploring the symptoms and causes of roof damage."
"Clicking on any of these suggestions produces an AI-generated answer, which is unlikely to generate traffic to an external source. Google is apparently testing AI-generated search snippets, foregoing the practice of using publishers' meta descriptions or body text. Sometimes, Google reportedly enhances a snippet with additional info, which can increase clicks. Google is integrating AI in blended results, especially local packs."
Google's integration of AI is altering organic search visibility by directly answering queries and generating on-page summaries that reduce clicks to external sites. AI Overviews summarize and cite top-ranking pages but often remove the need for users to click, raising average position metrics while lowering click-through rates. AI now answers "People also ask" questions and provides "suggested topics" that produce AI-generated answers, which further decreases referral traffic. Google experiments with AI-generated snippets instead of publisher text, sometimes enhancing snippets to increase clicks. AI is also applied to blended local results and local packs, changing click behavior for local businesses.
