The United Nations has issued a warning on the rapidly expanding global network of scam call centers, describing it as a cancer. Recent crackdowns in East and Southeast Asia have led organized crime groups to shift their operations to regions with more lenient laws. The UN's findings indicate that scam operations are now proliferating in Africa, South America, and beyond, as these crime syndicates seek to broaden their victim pools and maximize profits by hiring locals with diverse language skills. This expansion is viewed as both a strategic move against potential disruptions and a natural evolution in the industry.
"We are seeing a global expansion of East and Southeast Asian organized crime groups," said Benedikt Hofmann, acting regional representative for Southeast Asia and the Pacific at the UN's Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
