The Lahaina wildfire in August 2023 claimed at least 102 lives and destroyed thousands of structures in Maui, becoming one of the deadliest wildfires in American history. In response, residents founded Lahaina Strong, aiming to rebuild while addressing issues like affordable housing and land rights. This organization formed after a previous fire in 2018, highlighting the ongoing struggle against challenges such as climate change and economic recovery. The community is resisting land speculation and advocating for sustainable practices to prevent future disasters.
In response, Maui residents came together to form our organization Lahaina Strong with the goal of rebuilding our community in a way that centers the housing and other needs of Lahaina residents.
Our struggle speaks to the many broader challenges that communities face when disaster recovery collides with climate change, colonization, and economic recovery.
