Opinion: Berkeley should design streetscapes that create safe neighborhoods
Briefly

Whether by design or inaction, the city of Berkeley's policy choices eliminate basic passive public safety and increase the need for policing to impose safety. Berkeley should incorporate principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) into city policies and planning to improve safety for residents and support resilient communities.
CPTED creates safety in public spaces through building architecture, streetscape, and neighborhood design, promoting human connection, shared responsibility, and well-connected communities. Modern CPTED emphasizes welcoming street-level designs, diverse public spaces, and continuous public engagement for lively and engaging neighborhoods.
