Abraham Ruelas, an active community leader, discovered a car theft ring in his neighborhood, leading to a successful collaboration with local authorities to address the issue. With the help of the Oakland Housing Authority and Police Department, Ruelas not only facilitated the eviction of a key suspect but also helped reconnect stolen cars with their rightful owners. The efforts highlight the importance of neighborhood services coordinators and community resource officers in fostering communication and problem-solving within local communities. However, recent layoffs threaten this vital support system.
There was a car a day being stolen and brought to Galindo Street," said Ruelas, who has served as the chair of the Patten-Meadow Brook Neighborhood Council for 11 years.
We worked with the landlord to get the person evicted and we were able to reconnect some of the stolen cars to their owners.
Neighborhood services coordinators are city employees who act as liaisons between residents and city departments. They meet regularly with neighbors, listen to their concerns, and explore ways of fixing hyper-local problems.
This partnership has been made possible through the Neighborhood Services Division, a branch of the City Administrator's Office that provides public safety resources to volunteer-run community groups called neighborhood councils.
