Months after Hurricane Helene, some North Carolinians still struggle to find housing
Briefly

The remnants of Hurricane Helene caused severe flooding in Swannanoa, NC, drastically impacting the local Super 8 Motel, which had provided affordable housing for many residents. The motel's structure has been severely damaged, with rooms shifting and debris scattered throughout. Despite everyone escaping safely, many former residents remain without housing. Local residents, including Kim Maisch, have banded together to form Swannanoa Communities Together, focusing on assisting those affected by the storm in finding affordable living arrangements, a process that continues to be challenging and slow.
We are actually standing in the middle of where a foundation was for one of the hotel sections, we are looking at rooms shifted off.
I called him that morning and woke him up and asked him if he was okay, he didn't know exactly what was going on.
Most of the others living there still haven't found a new place to stay, it's a slow recovery process.
Kim Maisch now works with local group Swannanoa Communities Together to help residents find affordable housing after the storm.
