Inquirer closes community news desk, sparking outcry over diversity and equity goals - Poynter
Briefly

The Philadelphia Inquirer recently shut down its community news desk as part of a broader reduction in newsroom staffing, marking a significant shift in its approach to serving traditionally underserved populations. This desk, established with the aim of including African American, Hispanic, LGBTQ+, and disabled communities, was noted for its independent operation and commitment to these groups. Publisher Lisa Hughes cited necessary savings, leading to discontent among staff who believe this initiative was essential for inclusive reporting, especially amidst ongoing societal challenges.
I am deeply saddened and disappointed by the choice. The desk was, after all, an initiative built through many hours of discussion with community members from across Philadelphia.
The Inquirer will continue to identify areas where we can reasonably and responsibly make cuts so we can fulfill our core mission.
