How Altadena's community is leading its fire recovery efforts
Briefly

In Altadena, California, residents are banding together under the slogan "Altadena Is Not for Sale" to ensure their rebuilding from the recent devastating fires is led by the community rather than controlled by large developers. Three community organizations, backed by local Native American tribes, emphasize mutual aid and implementing Indigenous fire management practices. Altadena: Not For Sale, led by Melissa Michelson, advocates for the uninsured and aims to protect local interests through protests and demands that include establishing a land trust and preventing overdevelopment.
Altadena: Not For Sale states that its mission is to "help the under and non-insured to be able to stay" in Altadena and "not fall prey to predatory land speculators." Organized by Melissa Michelson, the organization held a protest on January 18th at which they shared their list of seven demands, including establishing a land trust, zoning regulations to prevent overdevelopment, group deals with architects, and educating residents on their rights.
This is a project. It's a very unfortunate situation to be in," says Michelson. "But maybe we could build something from it and be a community that doesn't sell out to developers and that keeps the people in place.
