Evangola State Park's ice volcanoes are temporary winter wonders formed by waves breaking through ice, creating stunning cone-shaped structures that can reach 20 feet tall.
After ice forms on the surface, powerful winds create waves that push water against the shore. This pressure causes water to erupt through cracks in the ice.
These ice volcanoes can be dangerous due to the unstable shelf ice. Visitors are strongly advised to avoid getting too close to the structures.
Guided snowshoe walks led by New York State Parks allow visitors to safely explore the winter landscape and ice volcanoes in Evangola State Park.
