Wildfire Smoke Is Dangerous for Humans. It's Even Worse for Birds.
Briefly

Birds, more sensitive than humans to toxic gases and particle pollution, are early indicators of poor air quality. Little is known about wildfire smoke impact on bird health and behavior.
In a 2021 study, radio-collared tule geese flew an extra 470 miles to avoid smoke, doubling migration time. Detours around smoke plumes can hinder bird reproduction due to increased energy demands.
