Advances in technologies like genomic sequencing and artificial intelligence have ushered in a new era in the fight against cancer, which kills nearly 10 million people worldwide every year. Researchers are now working on therapies that can be genetically tailored to individual patients and they're also working on methods for discovering cancers at much earlier stages. Someday, we might even have vaccines that can prevent the disease altogether.
And now all of a sudden, it's not quite such a blunt instrument. You're able to get a much more selective killing effect of the cancer. Now you have a way to tell in advance who might respond to this treatment. That was one of the first breakthroughs that allowed cancer treatment to start to become a bit more personalized.
