New research has shown that loggerhead sea turtles can discern and remember magnetic field signatures related to food. This ability, known as magnetoreception, allows turtles to 'dance' in response to familiar magnetic fields associated with meals. Conducted by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the study revealed that baby sea turtles respond to these magnetic fields even early in life, indicating a remarkable capability to learn and navigate effectively across large distances.
The results provide strong evidence that loggerhead turtles can learn the magnetic signatures of specific geographical areas; such an ability has, to our knowledge, never before been demonstrated in any animal.
Researchers observed baby sea turtles responding to magnetic fields associated with food from the beginning of their lives, suggesting early learning and memory.
