The Gulf of Mexico, long referred to by its name since 1550, has recently become the center of a naming debate initiated by Donald Trump, who proposed renaming it the Gulf of America. This move emphasizes the Gulf's economic importance particularly through extensive extraction industries that dominate the region. While the area has been romanticized by historical figures and country music stars, it has transformed into an industrial coast marked by significant drilling, fracking, and environmental concerns, raising questions about sustainability and ownership of national resources.
For more than a century, its industries have drilled, fracked and fished it to such an intense degree it's a wonder there's any oil, gas or seafood left to be had.
If the intensive extraction of riches from a patch of nature bestows proprietary rights over that patch, then the Gulf belongs to the US.
