Bifungites, found globally, are trace fossils from burrows of an unknown extinct creature, primarily discovered in Paleozoic rocks over 300 million years old.
During a 2022 expedition, paleontologist Daniel Sedorko found unique imprints of a small worm inside Bifungites burrows, suggesting they were made by these organisms.
This discovery, with seven additional fossilized burrows bearing the same worm imprint, provides insight into the behaviors of ancient soft-bodied invertebrates.
Carlos Neto de Carvalho highlighted the significance of the find, emphasizing the excitement in advancing the understanding of trace fossils and their origins.
