Research found that handbasins are 'hotspots' for dangerous microbes, including those causing pneumonia, prompting a need for thorough cleaning.
'In both settings we found a high abundance of pathogenic and corrosive germs, including some not typically carried in water,' said Claire Hayward.
'Residential handbasins have a more diverse bacterial community present on handbasin biofilms compared with hospitals,' said Dr Harriet Whiley.
The microbes in sinks pose potential health risks, as they are transferred via handwashing, water supply, or biological waste.
