The "trifecta of labels" that Earth's natural satellite gained when it rose on August 19 are a useful way to describe what the Moon is up to lately.
Around 25 percent of all full moons are supermoons, but only 6 percent are blue moons. This makes the blue supermoon a rare astronomical event.
The Moon is "super" because it looks much bigger when it's closer to Earth, specifically at its closest point, perigee.
Each year generally features three Full Moons per season, but in 2024, an extra Full Moon – the Blue Moon – occurs due to seasonal timing.
