Researchers at CERN have detected an ultra-rare kaon decay that could challenge the standard model of particle physics and suggest new physics beyond current theories.
Cristina Lazzeroni emphasized that, "If we measure a deviation from the [standard model], it's a clear sign of new physics," highlighting the significance of the findings.
The decay observed, referred to as a "golden channel," occurs in only one of ten billion kaons, providing a rare opportunity for scientific validation of existing theories.
To achieve this observation, scientists bombarded a target with protons using the Super Proton Synchrotron, ultimately leading to the successful detection of these remarkable kaon decays.
