A new study reveals that stars experience ‘starquakes’ causing brightness fluctuations that can be translated into sound. Researchers from Australian National University studied 27 stars in the M67 cluster, the oldest nearby star cluster, to uncover that as stars age, they can hit a plateau in vibrational patterns. This discovery allows for precise predictions of when and how frequently these plateaus occur, giving insights into the stars’ life cycles and enabling accurate age estimates.
"Stars have multiple layers, similar to an onion. We discovered that the plateau occurs due to events in a specific layer of the star and at specific frequencies that are influenced by a star's mass and metallicity."
"At that 'plateau', as Reyes calls it, a star will start 'repeating itself like a broken record, before resuming its progression.'"
