An international team of researchers has captured the first-ever footage of a juvenile colossal squid in the deep sea. The squid, measuring about one foot long, was filmed at a depth of nearly 2,000 feet during an expedition near the South Sandwich Islands. Researchers confirmed the species after collaboration with other scientists. Kat Bolstad, a researcher involved in the project, expressed delight in confirming the sighting of the young squid, which is mostly transparent, unlike its adult form. Future aims include capturing footage of an adult squid.
"I really love that we have seen a young colossal squid first. This animal is so beautiful," said Kat Bolstad, a squid researcher at the Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand, who helped confirm it.
Researchers are testing different cameras in hopes of catching an adult colossal squid, Bolstad said.
