"Metal roofing is gaining in popularity," reports Todd Miller, president of Isaiah Industries in Piqua, Ohio. It had a 14 percent market share in 2016, up from 11 percent the year before, according to FW Dodge. Only asphalt shingles outpace metal in the remodeling market. This shift suggests that more homeowners are recognizing the long-term benefits and aesthetic appeal that metal roofing provides, setting it apart as a competitive option in today’s roofing selections.
"Metal roofs are by far one of the most durable roof options, typically lasting 50 years or more," says Andrew Hecox, owner of Air Capital Roofing and Remodeling in Wichita, Kansas. This durability surpasses that of rubber and asphalt shingles, which have a lifespan of around 15 to 20 years. The ability of metal roofs to resist corrosion, cracking, and ignition from lightning strikes adds to their appeal, particularly in extreme weather conditions.
"Metal roofing also doesn't need periodic costly maintenance like other materials," says Lonnie Hagen of Accent Roofing and Construction in Dallas. This characteristic makes metal not only a practical choice for homeowners concerned about longevity, but also an economical choice over time, as it reduces the need for frequent repairs and replacements associated with traditional roofing materials.
The pitter-patter of raindrops may be soothing for some homeowners, but on a metal roof, the noise factor can be a significant downside. While many enjoy the sound of rain, others may find it problematic, suggesting that potential homeowners should consider their personal preferences and the associated acoustics before making a final decision.
