Poinsettias: How they became one of the most popular potted plants
Briefly

Few plants have as many names as the poinsettia, bought primarily during the holidays, making it one of the most popular potted plants in the U.S.
The Aztecs named the poinsettia Cuetlaxochitl and used its sap for medicinal purposes and red leaves to create dye, viewing them as gifts from the gods.
Poinsettias are displayed in Mexico around Dia de la Virgen on December 12, which coincides with Poinsettia Day in the U.S., commemorating Joel Poinsett.
While often mistaken for flower petals, the red leaves of poinsettias are actually bracts designed to attract pollinators.
