In a distant future, the sun will die and become a white dwarf, engulfing the inner planets but possibly sparing the outer planets. Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope have found evidence of giant exoplanets orbiting white dwarfs. These findings provide insight into the fate of our own solar system.
The four white dwarfs were chosen for JWST's scrutiny because there seemed to be good chances that they had possessed planets in their pre-red-giant phasesand that any planets still lingering around them, in this post-mid-life period, could possibly someday be us.
