The combination of a supermoon and a blue moon is extraordinarily rare, occurring about once a decade or sometimes as far apart as 20 years.
A supermoon occurs when the moon's orbit is within 90% of its closest distance to Earth, making it appear larger and brighter.
The super blue moon will reach its peak fullness at 2:26 p.m. on August 19, but will be best observed after sunset.
While the upcoming supermoons are set for September, October, and November, the next super blue moon won't happen again until 2037.
