Pyramid Lake, a 125,000-acre body of water in Nevada, has been experiencing one of the most significant algal bloom events in years, with intense green swirls caused by Nodularia spumigena.
The algal blooms, caused by higher than normal cyanobacteria levels, pose a serious health risk as they can release toxins like microcystin, which leads to skin irritation and potential kidney and liver damage.
Aaron Bill, from the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, emphasized the importance of public awareness regarding the dangerous algae, advising people to avoid contact and ensure safe drinking water for their pets.
The bloom's breakdown is releasing the toxin microcystin into the water, marking a typical progression towards normal conditions, which may take several weeks, according to the tribe's monitoring.
