After decades of speculation, scientists have named the previously unidentified chemical compound found in tap water: chloronitramide, a byproduct of chloramine disinfection.
The study highlighted that chloronitramide was detected in 40 samples across 10 U.S. water systems, often exceeding EPA limits for disinfection byproducts.
Despite not yet knowing the toxicity of chloronitramide, its prevalence and similarity to other known toxic compounds raises significant concerns for public health.
Researchers have recommended activated carbon as a method to potentially remove chloronitramide from drinking water, providing consumers a practical solution.
