Inyo SAR received two calls for help for climbers who had gotten stuck on icy climbing and scrambling routes Sunday, the rescue team announced on Facebook Sept. 23. The climbers hadn't been able to continue in any direction, Inyo SAR said. Volunteers responded to the calls and rescued five people after ascending the routes.
These missions are very risky to all people involved, and they are entirely avoidable. Inyo SAR in its post advised climbers who aren't prepared with adequate gear and training for snow and ice to turn around when encountering these conditions, instead of climbing on.
If you continue into higher elevations, the snow and ice will just get worse - risk and consequences increase greatly. Icy and snowy conditions are currently present throughout the High Sierra, including on the western side of the Sierra crest.
