Mosquito season is upon us. So why are Southern California officials releasing more of them?
Briefly

Their task? Find lady mosquitoes and mate. Technicians had zapped the insects, all males, with radiation in a nearby lab to make them sterile. That means fewer mouths to feed - mouths that thirst for human blood.
Controlling invasive Aedes aegypti mosquitoes by releasing sterilized males helps reduce disease transmission. Agencies use mosquitoes' biology against them to combat widespread breeding sites.
