The Axial Seamount, located 300 miles off Oregon's coast, is experiencing significant seismic activity, indicating a potential eruption. Researchers report over 200 earthquakes daily, with signs similar to those before the 2015 eruption. The marine geophysicist William Wilcock notes that magma is gathering beneath the seafloor. Despite the urgency, experts believe an eruption would not endanger coastal residents due to the volcano's depth and distance from shore. However, underwater earthquakes are predicted to surge dramatically during an eruption event.
At the moment, there are a couple hundred earthquakes a day, but that's still a lot less than we saw before the previous eruption.
I would say it was going to erupt sometime later (this year) or early 2026, but it could be tomorrow, because it's completely unpredictable.
If Axial Seamount does blow within the next few days, it won't pose any threat to human communities along the West Coast.
The region has seen a sharp rise in the number of earthquakes in just the last month, with a major spike in activity recorded on April 13.
