The project by American Bird Conservancy, Re:wild, and BirdLife International aims to regularly update the list to aid in rediscovering lost bird species before they reach the 10-year media absence benchmark.
Study authors compiled 42 million media records, with 144 bird species identified as 'lost,' accounting for 1.2% of known birds, while noting rediscoveries like the black-naped pheasant-pigeon.
Study co-author Eliot Miller emphasized the comprehensive nature and significance of using public media databases to document and track the 'lost' bird species.
