In Amazonian folklore, male river dolphins, known as encantade, transform into men to seduce women. Although a study by Canadian biologists found no shapeshifting, they observed male dolphins engaging in unique behaviors resembling a 'pissing contest'. The dolphins would display their genitalia and deliberately urinate high into the air, suggesting a possible form of communication or social bonding, rather than just a simple biological act. Their findings, documented in the journal Behavioral Processes, highlight remarkable social behaviors in these cetaceans.
We were really shocked, as it was something we had never seen before.
This behavior could serve as a form of chemical sensory communication and not merely a need to relieve themselves.
