It will take time before the impact of pollution passes through the River Allow and fish and insect life return to the affected stretch of the body of water, according to the latest statement from Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI).
An IFI statement issued to The Corkman on Wednesday revealed that more than an estimated 5,000 fish, including brown trout, Atlantic salmon, lamprey, and eel, have been killed in the river.
After identifying the channel length affected in the fish kill by conducting inspections, IFI determined that 8km downstream of the suspected discharge is the likely area of water body impacted.
IFI awaits the report of the independent accredited laboratory in relation to surface water samples taken at the time of the incident, which will inform any decision on initiating a prosecution for breaches of legislation.
