"You'd think as a country we would be able to look after our most pristine landscapes," says cold water swimmer Jo Broughton, reflecting on the alarming levels of pharmaceutical pollution found in Tideswell Brook.
Recent research led by Prof Alistair Boxall highlights that Tideswell Brook has the second highest levels of active pharmaceutical pollution in the UK. The presence of substances such as antidepressants and antibiotics poses serious concerns for both human and ecological health.
Lyn Crowe, chairwoman of the local environment group, expressed her distress, "It horrifies me to think that this stream is more badly polluted now than when we first came here 27 years ago." This illustrates the urgent need for improvement in water quality.
Local open water swimmer Jill Turner remarked humorously about the situation, stating, "When we found out about the antidepressants, we laughed about it at first because you do feel really chilled out when you go cold water swimming!" This underscores the complicated feelings residents have regarding the brook's pollution.
