Called T Coronae Borealis, the binary system houses a red giant star and a white dwarf, with the latter drawing material from the former to eventually explode in a fierce thermonuclear detonation.
The explosion, termed a nova, results in the white dwarf temporarily shining as bright as a new star, emitting significant energy exceeding the sun's annual output by 100,000 times before eventually fading back to normal luminosity.
