The annual Lake Merritt BioBlitz invites citizen scientists to help document the array of living organisms in the area, as part of the 2025 City Nature Challenge. Hosted by the Rotary Nature Center Friends, the event encourages participation from all, regardless of expertise. The observation phase allows anyone with a smartphone to photograph and record lifeforms using the iNaturalist app. Volunteers will assist participants, and a microscope will be available for detailed observations. The event fosters community involvement and aims to enrich biodiversity understanding through citizen contributions.
Join citizen scientists at the annual Lake Merritt BioBlitz Saturday to help document Lake Merritt's array of living organisms.
The cool thing is you don't have to have an expert to do this. It is something everyone can engage in.
The City Nature Challenge helps document biodiversity across the nation's cities and is run by teams at the California Academy of Sciences.
Anyone with a smartphone can participate. The first phase of the challenge starts today and runs through Monday.
