Healey signs law phasing out toxic PFAS in firefighters' gear
Briefly

Governor Maura Healey emphasized the dangers firefighters face from PFAS chemicals, stating, "It's one thing to run into a fire... but to face the threat of 'forever chemicals' - a silent killer" that threatens firefighters' health.
Healey pointed out, "These dangerous, dangerous chemicals. They're in too much of our stuff, but certainly we know they've been in protective gear. The devastating impacts are so clear."
Under the new law effective January 2025, manufacturers will be required to give notice to purchasers about PFAS in firefighting equipment, starting a shift toward safer protective gear.
By 2027, manufacturers must stop selling firefighting gear with intentionally-added PFAS, marking a significant step in protecting the health of firefighters and addressing public health concerns.
