The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, crucial for monitoring volcanic activity, may soon lose its office due to federal cost-cutting measures initiated by Elon Musk's department aimed at reducing operational costs. The termination of the Hilo office's lease, set for September 30, raises concerns about how this might impact vital research and public safety services. With over 30 staff monitoring volcano data continuously, the observatory plays a critical role in keeping residents informed about potential volcanic hazards during eruptions, particularly the recent activity of Kilauea volcano.
For the past hundred years, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has been tasked with monitoring the islands' geologic activity, for the purposes of both scientific research and public safety warnings.
The Geological Survey office in Hilo, Hawaii, has appeared on an internal list of federal offices whose leases are due to be cancelled on 30 September.
Those same scientists, along with their volcano-monitoring equipment, may soon be evicted from their office because of Elon Musk's federal government cost-cutting.
A spokesperson for the US Geological Survey said... we are actively working with General Services Administration to ensure that every facility and asset is utilized effectively.
