Going against the current: What separates Monterey from other aquariums

Packard explained the invertebrates, algae and the small, squishy thing typically don't get a lot of focus in aquariums but thanks to its location, the Monterey Bay Aquarium was able to highlight these stories. With our access to natural seawater, we can present these creatures in a very authentic way, capturing their ecological significance and life cycles that people seldom see in typical aquarium exhibits.
Despite early skepticism about focusing on local marine life, Julie Packard shared that the vision of the founders centered on showcasing the unique biodiversity of Monterey Bay. Rather than mimicking traditional aquariums, they aimed to tell the stories of local species and ecosystems, thereby shifting the narrative of marine awareness from exotic to local.
