Joro spiders are native to Japan, China, Korea and Taiwan, likely transported to the U.S. via shipping containers. They have spread in parts of north-central and northeast Georgia since around 2014.
Researchers at East Tennessee State University suggest the Joro spider will continue to move north due to their tolerance to cold climates and ability to adapt to various environments, including urban areas.
