Zoo director Matthias Reinschmidt noted that newborn polar bears have a very high mortality rate due to challenging conditions in both wild and zoo environments.
To protect the cubs, Reinschmidt mentioned that the enclosure area was cordoned off and viewed as crucial for Nuka to look after her young cubs quietly.
Reinschmidt elaborated on polar bear reproduction, stating that fertilized eggs enter a dormancy phase before a short pregnancy, leading to the births of tiny cubs.
He emphasized the significance of the births being the first in Karlsruhe since 1991, indicating a successful breeding pairing with father bear Kap.
