"No animal has ever been this far away" from the wildlife park, said Hilgartner, adding the unusual distance illustrates the macaque's adventurous spirit.
"The pressure to be with the group, in familiar surroundings, is great," said Hilgartner, emphasizing that escaped macaques often return due to social bonds.
"The number of Barbary macaques living in the wild is estimated to be less than 8000," highlighting the species' vulnerable conservation status.
