Galaxies are way bigger than we thought, new research shows DW 09/06/2024
Briefly

The true size of galaxies has remained a mystery. A new study published today has found that galaxies are far bigger than originally thought, perhaps several times bigger.
This study revealed that large 'halos' of gas extend from the visible spiral arms of galaxies, far out into deep space, changing our understanding of galaxy size.
These gas halos only became visible with new imaging techniques, detecting them over 100,000 light years into deep space, vastly increasing galaxy size estimations.
Filaments of gas and dust flow out from the spiral arms of galaxies into deep space, demonstrating how galaxies interact with one another in this vast expanse.
