Elon Musk's SpaceX is determined to achieve a permanent human presence on Mars, aiming for a crewed mission as early as 2029. However, former NASA astronaut José Hernández argues that this timeline is overly optimistic, indicating that a more realistic estimate is 15 years away. He stresses the need for significant preparatory work, including the development of a lunar base to test essential technologies for Mars missions. Additionally, SpaceX faces numerous technical challenges with its Starship rocket, which has encountered failures during testing, highlighting the complexities of space travel.
We're a good 15 years away from going to Mars, not five years as Elon Musk alludes to... space travel is not trivial.
We need to develop a lunar base where technologies...needed to go to Mars...need to be developed and tested.
SpaceX is still a long way from boarding astronauts. It has yet to publicly address progress...on-orbit refueling and extraterrestrial landing.
There are too many technical hurdles...with the development of Starship, as seen with two consecutive prototypes blowing up mid-flight.
