Juice spacecraft completed the first lunar-Earth flyby, using gravitational assists to alter its trajectory and speed towards Jupiter, enhancing its mission efficiency.
The gravity assist flyby was flawless, everything went without a hitch, and we were thrilled to see Juice coming back so close to Earth, says Ignacio Tanco.
Juice made its closest approach to the Moon at 23:15 CEST on August 19, benefiting from the gravitational forces of Earth and the Moon to alter its course.
The route Juice is taking provides a shortcut to Jupiter through the inner Solar System, aiding its research mission set to explore three of Jupiter's moons.
