"There is no reason we should have typhoid fever today if we have proper access to safe water and sanitation," says Dr. Maria Neira, underscoring the preventable nature of this disease.
"When he fell sick, Ukasha's father took him to Hayatabad Medical Complex, a hospital in Peshawar. Typhoid was soon diagnosed, but the hospital was rammed with patients," indicating the severity of the outbreak.
"Typhoid was once treatable with a set of pills and now ends up with patients in hospital," says Jehan Zeb Khan, reflecting the shift from manageable treatment to severe cases due to antibiotic resistance.
"Most people, if they get the drugs promptly, should start recovering within a few days. But the antibiotics used to cure typhoid are now failing," highlighting the urgency of the antibiotic resistance crisis.
