Seven days a week, a team of motorcycle couriers fan out to 80 clinics across several regions of Tanzania to pick up sputum samples for TB detection by African giant pouched rats at APOPO's lab in Dar Es Salaam.
The rats, trained by APOPO's TB programme, are key to identifying TB-positive samples by smell, with efficiency and cost benefits compared to traditional microscopy methods.
